The Chronicles of Christmas: Father Christmas

Posted by Matt Tuttle On November - 29 - 2009

Long Live Aslan! And Merry Christmas.

This week we take a closer look at who Father Christmas really is and how he is linked to the Christ child. In the book “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” Father Christmas makes an appearance where he hands out presents out to Lucy, Peter, and Susan. Instead of giving them presents he gives them tools for the battle ahead of them. Tools, not toys.

Pastor Tuttle dives into the life of C.S. Lewis bringing insight into why he included such a prominent figure in a children’s book; in a way that is different than how we view Father Christmas today. The focus is not on toys and goodies but rather to convey a message of hope. Father Christmas bridges the gap between winter and Christmas bringing to light what really matters in the season. That the King, the Messiah, is coming to save the world from an evil force and that we need to be prepared.

What an awesome message. It helps remind us what the season is really about. I can go without presents but I can’t go without my Jesus!

I simply re-emphasize the importance of the question, whom do we choose. Whom do we choose when the childlike unity of Easter Eggs and Jesus risen or Father Christmas [Santa] and the baby in the manger can no longer co-exist? If we put Jesus first we can keep Father Christmas. But if we choose Father Christmas as our priority then we have lost the true meaning of Christmas. Whom do you serve? Toys and candy that are temporary pleasures or salvation that is our eternal joy?
