As Jesus spoke his last words “Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit” the earth shook and the temple curtain split into two. The dead began to rise from their graves. It was probably quite a sight to see.

This is Easter sunday and the message is not just about the cross it is about the resurrection. Jesus spoke these words on the cross and then died but three days later rose from the dead. After Jesus had been on the cross for several hours he cries out to God “It is finished!”. Around that time the curtain at the temple split into two, an earthquake occured, it became dark during the noon hour, and bodies rose from the dead. A guard stood by watching these things, and at that moment declared “Surely this man is the Son of God”.

This is the fifth week of the Seven Sayings of Jesus on the cross. Jesus is in the final hours on the cross and becomes thirsty so he tells the guards he is thirsty. Upon receiving a bitter drink Jesus refuses the drug so that he would bear the full pain of the cross.
